Muslims begin the fast with a pre-dawn meal called Suhoor and break the fast at sunset with Iftar, traditionally starting with dates and water. While fasting, Muslims also engage in increased prayer, charity, and reflection. Exemptions are made for those who are ill, pregnant, breastfeeding, young children, the elderly, and travelers. Fasting ends with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a festive day of prayer and giving.
